A bright and groove-heavy take on alt-pop, the music of Capital Cities draws its infectious energy from the endless juxtapositions within each song: genre-bending production meets indelible melody, high-concept artistry meets classic pop sensibility, clever lyricism meets raw emotion. The L.A.-based duo first unveiled that aesthetic with their breakout hit “Safe and Sound,” a 2011 release that went multi-platinum around the world and shot to the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. With their new single “Vowels,” singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalists Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian push their inventive musicality even further to dream up a sound that’s instantly magnetic.
It’s easy to get the wrong impression about Warpaint. The band’s studio albums (including their most recent full-length, 2014’s Warpaint) tend to emphasize moody atmospheres: gauzy keyboards, hypnotic harmonies and sinister grooves. In concert, however, the Los Angeles quartet—vocalist/guitarist Emily Kokal, vocalist/guitarist Theresa Wayman, bassist/vocalist Jenny Lee Lindberg and drummer/keyboardist Stella Mozgawa—pair this moodiness with bumped-up tempos and sinewy beats.
Frontman Dave Bayley and bandmates Drew MacFarlane (guitar), Edmund Irwin-Singer (bass) and Joe Seward (Drums) around the world and back; climaxing in sold-out shows at The Wiltern in LA and Terminal 5 in New York, via huge festival slots in Australia, the US and - of course - Glastonbury.
In 2010, Auckland, New Zealand’s Thom Powers, Alisa Xayalith, Aaron Short, David Beadle, and Jesse Wood arrived at the forefront of the international indie pop scene with the sweltering The Naked and Famous debut, Passive Me, Aggressive You. Riding on the feverish heights reached by singles like Young Blood, Punching In A Dream and Girls Like You the album thrust the band into the limelight and onto the airwaves.
German singer-songwriter duo Milky Chance fuse alternative rock with reggae and electronic music to create their unique sound.
